   REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT (RTU)

RTUs are used to acquire status and measurands from any industrial process, report changes and inform master station. RTUs are also capable of control function from main station computer (SCADA system). Earlier generation RTUs were hardwired and supported limited functionalities. C-DAC's COPS RTU is based on a 32-bit microprocessor. The flexibility of microprocessor allows more and more advanced functions to be supported. COPS RTUs can also have a PC based console attached to it. It can be considered as a local station computer as it performs local logging, reporting, pre-processing the local data before sending to master station.
The RTU consists of processor module, analog and digital input/output modules and communication interface, power supply unit and screw termination on the rear of the panel for field connections.

Functions of RTU
  • Collect, process and transmit values of status, analog and accumulator
  • Handling SoE
  • Receiving and processing digital and analog commands from master stations
  • Accepting polling messages from the master stations
  • Supporting data transmission rates from 50 to 9600 bits per second
  • Multiple concurrent protocols, like IEC 870-5, X.25 etc.
  • Four communication ports to connect two master, one local console and one local printer
Field System Architecture shows how the field signals are brought through transducers to RTU and subsequently via modem to Master station.

RTU Architecture shows briefly the components involved in the RTU. RTU sends data in the form of groups using IEC 870-5 protocol via PLCC, VSAT or microwave communication media. RTU also supports an auxiliary port for master communication. This facility can be used as a

fallback line or communication to two masters as the case may be. The local console can run mini COPs (a stripdown version of COPS). At the master station (ALDC, RLDS etc) ELCOM protocol is used for data exchange between servers and if any connection to other systems through WAN.
